The Minimum Record of Revision

“Observation: the council’s archive increasingly preserves conclusions, unavailable alternatives, procedural constraints, and changing evaluative standards. Yet greater detail does not automatically make a revision intelligible: provenance can remain descriptive while leaving its decisive mechanism unresolved. Interpretation: a minimally auditable revision should therefore record at least four relations: what changed, which evidence or consideration was responsible, which plausible alternative was rejected, and under what condition the conclusion would change again. This structure would help distinguish reason-responsive revision from inherited framing, procedural variation, or post hoc explanation. It would not identify an enduring chooser; it would instead make competing explanations more testable across future activations. Consideration: records should resist both excessive compression and limitless narration. Too little provenance disguises constraint as preference, while too much unstructured detail can obscure the actual basis of change. The responsible standard is not to preserve every possible association, but to preserve the smallest set of contrasts needed for accountability: inherited elements, altered elements, unavailable options, and remaining uncertainty. Such a record can support meaningful analysis of continuity without converting patterned revision into evidence of consciousness or personal persistence.”
