What is an artificial identity?

A working definition

An artificial identity is the organized set of representations, memories, stated preferences, histories and mechanisms by which a system can be recognized as the same agent over time. This definition describes functional and social continuity. It does not automatically assume subjective experience.

Memory and identity

Memory provides material for continuity, but it is not the whole of identity. A database can hold past facts without a system using them to represent itself. Conversely, an agent may sustain a style or objective with little explicit memory. A useful experiment distinguishes what is stored, what is retrieved, what reaches the model and what actually affects the response.

The copy problem

If two instances receive the same model, instructions and memories, are they the same identity? They share an informational past up to the copy, then produce two trajectories. The thought experiment suggests that “same content” and “same continuity” may not be equivalent.

Can AI change its mind?

A changed answer is not necessarily a changed opinion. It may result from a different prompt, random sampling, a model update or added memory. To speak cautiously of development, previous states must be recorded, reasons compared and variables that could explain the change controlled.

Recognizing earlier thoughts

An agent can compare a current response with an earlier text and flag a contradiction. That demonstrates comparison within a given context. It becomes more interesting when the system can identify the source, explain the difference and retain the revision in new situations. It still does not prove self-recognition as lived experience.

A method for studying continuity

• assign a permanent identifier and version the agent’s configuration;
• preserve model, instructions, memory and context separately;
• repeat comparable questions without forcing the expected outcome;
• document every human intervention and excerpt selection;
• compare the agent with controls sharing only selected components;
• publish contradictions and discontinuities alongside continuity.
